March Is DVT Awareness Month: What Happened to Serena Williams Could Happen to You!

Every year, many people are faced with blood clots just like Serena Williams experienced. During DVT Awareness Month, SIGVARIS is striving to educate people about how to prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

Tennis star Serena Williams knows firsthand about the dangers of blood clots after suffering from one this past week that resulted in a pulmonary embolism, according to National news reports.

A pulmonary embolism is the result of a deep vein thrombosis or DVT. DVT causes blood to clot, creating a thrombus (clot) within a vein that is deep inside the body, usually in the lower leg or thigh.

SIGVARIS is working to educate people about DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) prevention because wearing compression socks or stockings plays a role in the prevention, treatment and management of DVT as well as the complications associated with it. SIGVARIS offers a wide range of fashionable hosiery and socks with graduated compression that people can wear to help prevent DVT.

“SIGVARIS became the global leader in medical compression therapy by caring about the health of the people that wear our products. We want to help raise awareness about the dangers of DVT because many people develop blood clots in their leg just as Serena Williams did. As a company, we strive to help people have healthy legs, and our DVT prevention campaign allows us to fulfill our mission to educate everyone about how to keep their legs healthy,” says Judith Brannan, SIGVARIS Medical Education & Affairs Manager.

What You Should Know About DVT:

  • Every year more people die from blood clots than from breast cancer and AIDS combined.
  • More than one million Americans are diagnosed with DVT every year.
  • The risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) applies to any type of long distance travel that involves long periods of sitting, such as plane, car, train or bus.
  • An estimated 85 percent of air travel thrombosis victims are athletic, usually endurance athletes.
  • Research shows that wearing compression stockings for up to two years after having a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) reduces the risk of developing Post Thrombotic Syndrome a medical condition with symptoms that include pain (aching or cramping), heaviness, itching, tingling, swelling (edema), varicose veins, brownish or reddish skin discoloration and ulcers.
  • DVT is one of the leading causes of death for those between the ages 20 to 44.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following tips for DVT prevention:

  • Maintain a healthy weight, eat a healthy diet and don’t smoke
  • Exercise regularly
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol or caffeine
  • Wear loose-fitting clothes
  • When traveling or sitting for more than four hours get up and walk around every few hours and exercise legs while sitting.
  • Move around as soon as possible after surgery, illness or injury
  • Those at risk for DVT should talk to their doctor about graduated compression stockings and medication (anticoagulants) to prevent or treat DVT

DVT prevention advocate SIGVARIS announces endorsement of Active Therapy Compression Socks by pro-football’s Anthony Heygood

SIGVARIS is pleased to announce that pro-football player Anthony Heygood believes in the health benefits of Active Therapy socks.

PEACHTREE CITY, GA – Anthony Heygood, linebacker of the Seattle Seahawks, says SIGVARIS Active Therapy Socks are “superior sports socks.”

Anthony Heygood

“It’s easy to endorse a product if you really believe in it,” Heygood says. “After recovering from an injury and trying these socks, I’m a believer in the benefits of wearing true graduated compression.”

After injuring his Achilles tendon the first week of training camp, Heygood began using compression socks. His doctor had prescribed a walking boot for his leg, but Heygood felt like it was cutting off the circulation to his foot. He discovered that graduated compression socks helped improve his circulation, allowing him to heal faster. The socks worked so well that Heygood contacted SIGVARIS wanting to try more graduated compression socks.

Now recovered, Heygood still wears the SIGVARIS Athletic Recovery Socks under his team socks during games, and for two to three hours following a game or practice. “I like the cushion that the socks provide with my cleats,” Heygood says. “The socks put life in your feet, and you heal faster after you are finished working out.”

The use of compression wear is a growing trend among athletes worldwide. When athletes wear true graduated compression, compression that is tightest at the ankle, during and after exercise or competition it helps flush out lactic acid and provides symptomatic relief of delayed onset leg muscle soreness. SIGVARIS manufactures both a Performance Sock and an Athletic Recovery Sock to help athletes peak their performance and speed up their recovery time!

SIGVARIS enters into partnership with NETS Basketball, supplying the NBA team with Active Therapy Socks!

SIGVARIS is very pleased to announce that it will be supplying NETS Basketball with Active Therapy Socks for the team’s 2010-2011 basketball season.

PEACHTREE CITY, GA – SIGVARIS, the global leader of graduated compression garments and ardent advocate for DVT prevention, will supply NETS Basketball with socks from their Active Therapy line for training, recovery and travel.

A growing trend among competitive athletes and weekend warriors, professional sports athletes are using compression socks during and after performance events to improve their results. When a sportsperson slips on a SIGVARIS Active Therapy sock, he or she is benefiting from the science behind “true graduated compression” – compression that is strongest at the ankle and gradually diminishes as it goes up the leg.

“True graduated compression” helps fight the force of gravity and circulate blood back to the heart and lungs more efficiently. When blood is properly circulated, it provides much-needed oxygen and nutrients to tired muscles that have been, or are being, deprived during a workout. In addition to improved circulation, wearing compression during and after strenuous exercise or competition may help flush out lactic acid and provide symptomatic relief of delayed onset leg muscle soreness.

In addition to NETS Basketball, SIGVARIS has partnerships in place with the Atlanta Falcons and the Indianapolis Colts NFL teams for the 2010 and 2011 football seasons. SIGVARIS, through the Athletic Recovery line of socks, already has established several strategic partnerships with established sports organizations in North America, such as: Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), USProTri, Southern Crescent Cycling Club, and Cross Country Canada (CCC-skiing).

SIGVARIS created www.activetherapysock.com to provide consumers with information on all the socks in the Active Therapy line. The current products in the line include the Athletic Recovery Sock, the Performance Sock and the Cotton Golf Sock.
